Education and Consultancies — growth plan

The enquiry is not the win. The enrolment is — and the gap between them is where the money goes.

Marketing for education consultancies, colleges, schools and training institutes — built around a long, family-influenced decision and a lead-to-enrolment ratio nobody tracks.

How customers find you

A long, anxious research process that starts on social media and ends in a physical office. Prospective students see counsellor content, success stories and destination comparisons on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok, then search specific questions — visa success, IELTS requirements, tuition costs, part-time work rules. Parents and relatives, frequently including family already abroad, exert enormous influence and are often the ones actually researching.

What usually goes wrong

  • Cost per lead reported proudly while the lead-to-enrolment ratio is unknown
  • Enquiries arriving at 10pm and answered at 11am the next day, by which time three competitors have replied
  • Marketing claims about visa success rates that cannot be substantiated
  • Identical messaging to students and to the parents who are actually deciding
  • Peak-season advertising with no year-round presence, so every intake starts from zero
  • Counsellors treated as an operational cost rather than as the brand people are choosing

The decision journey

How the decision is actually made.

  1. 01

    Aspiration

Often years before action. Built by peer success stories and destination content.

  2. 02

    Research

Country, course and cost compared. Heavy Facebook group and YouTube consumption.

  3. 03

    Shortlisting

Two to four consultancies, selected largely on perceived credibility and someone's recommendation.

  4. 04

    Consultation

The office visit. This is where the decision is genuinely made, and where marketing hands over.

  5. 05

    Family approval

A separate approval process with different concerns — safety, cost, and who is paying.

  6. 06

    Enrolment and beyond

The successful student becomes the next intake's most effective marketing, if anyone asks them.

What a buyer must believe first

  • Verifiable university partnerships and authorisations
  • Named counsellors with real credentials and experience
  • Transparent, itemised fees — including what is not included
  • Honest treatment of visa risk, rather than implied guarantees
  • Testimonials from identifiable students who consented

The plan

What we would actually do for a education business.

Brand

How the brand should be built

Compete on counsellor expertise and on transparency, not on volume claims. Every consultancy on the same street shows the same flags and the same smiling graduates. A position built on a specific competence — a destination, a discipline, a student profile — is defensible; 'we send students abroad' is not. Name your counsellors and let people choose a person.

Digital

What the website or app has to do

Country and course pages that answer the real questions with real numbers. Fast mobile pages — most of this research happens on a phone. WhatsApp and Viber as first-class enquiry channels with defined response times. A CRM that tracks a lead through consultation, application, visa and enrolment, because without it nobody can tell which channel produces students rather than enquiries.

Content

The content system

Counsellor-led explainer video answering the specific, anxious questions people search: visa interview preparation, financial documentation, part-time work rules, what happens if an application is refused. Student stories with documented consent. Content built for parents as a distinct audience. Seasonal content aligned to intake cycles, produced ahead of them.

Paid media

How to buy attention here

Meta for aspiration and reach, targeted at both students and the parent demographic. Google Ads on high-intent research terms, where cost per click is high and the bidding is genuinely competitive. YouTube for long-form counsellor credibility. Retargeting of people who read a country page but did not enquire. Year-round presence at lower spend beats an intake-only burst.

Search

Search, AEO and local visibility

Deep, honest question-led content — this sector has enormous long-tail search demand and most of it is answered badly. Destination and course pages, visa process guides, cost breakdowns. Local SEO for the office. This is a category where AI assistants are already being asked to compare options, which rewards specific, structured, verifiable information.

Conversion

Turning interest into a customer

Response time is the single largest controllable variable. Automated acknowledgement within seconds, human contact within the hour, appointment booking without a phone call. A structured consultation that qualifies rather than pitches. Follow-up sequences for the long gap between consultation and application, which is where most leads are lost quietly.

Retention

Keeping them

Alumni are the highest-conversion referral source in this sector and are almost universally ignored after departure. Stay in contact, ask for stories, and make referral easy and rewarded. Students recruit siblings, cousins and friends for years.

Regulatory and ethical constraints

Education consultancies in Nepal operate under Ministry of Education requirements including No Objection Certificate processes. Marketing must not imply guaranteed visas, guaranteed admission or guaranteed employment.

Measurement

What is worth measuring here.

These are indicators, not promises. What they are useful for is telling you whether the work is doing anything — early enough to change it.

Lead-to-enrolment rate
The number that turns cost per lead into cost per student. Most consultancies do not have it.
Median first-response time
In this sector, the fastest credible reply frequently wins the consultation.
Consultation attendance rate
Separates a lead-quality problem from a booking-process problem.
Cost per enrolment by channel
The only basis on which to reallocate budget between channels.
Referral share of enrolments
Measures whether alumni are being used at all.

    Educationfrequently asked questions

Can we advertise our visa success rate?
Only if you can substantiate it with your own records and state the basis clearly — the period, the destination and how it is calculated. Brandx will not publish an unverifiable success rate. Beyond the regulatory risk, prospective students increasingly check these claims, and one exposed exaggeration is worse than never having made one.
Why are our leads not converting?
In most audits the cause is response time, not lead quality. Enquiries in this sector arrive late in the evening and go to whoever replies first. The second most common cause is that nothing happens between the consultation and the application, which is a gap of weeks with no contact.
Should we market to students or to parents?
Both, separately. The student builds the aspiration; the parent approves the cost and worries about safety. The same advertisement rarely does both jobs, and parents are frequently the ones doing the detailed research.
